As herbal supplements consumers buying herbal remedies, and other vitamin supplements, we still have to take responsibility for our choices.

When we self diagnose, we have to understand that we are applying information we’re not experts in, and that if we or those close to us have a serious condition, we have a responsibility to get qualified assistance. However, we should also take responsibility for our own healing, whether it be for a serious or minor condition. Its easy to leave things up to someone else, to give our power away and passively sit back and await some mysterious or mundane force to make it all better.

 

How can we take responsibility for our own healing?

We can become more knowledgable about the conditions of our ailments, both from conventional and perhaps more alternative points of view. We can assess the emotional and physical circumstances that led up to the ailment. Were we taking care of ourselves emotionally? Spiritually? Were there aspects of ourselves we wanted to explore but either couldn’t fit them into our schedule or our preconceived notions of what we should be doing with our life? Are we driving ourselves into the ground by overworking? If so, why? What are we trying to achieve? A position in society? Money? The goodwill of someone? Security? And are we taking vitamin and herbal supplements to patch ourselves up without really taking a closer look at underlying factors?

A little trick – unless you create the conditions for something inside of you, you will never find it outside of yourself.

Herbal supplements are not drugs

Their effect is a little less localised, less concentrated, and generally not created by one single or principle mechanism. Herbal supplements have a nutritional aspect even when in tincture form (a tincture is made usually with alcohol and the plant, although there are often alcohol free preparations available). This nutrtional aspect is not primary as in the case of eating your vegetables and Green Barley, however! Herbal supplements, like all things, also have an energetic quality. Our ailments, and whatever our current constitution is, also has an energetic quality, and balancing those can be important in our choice of herbal supplements.

For example, acute illnesses can often be classified as “hot”, so a cooling herbal supplements might be appropriate. However, if a person is “cold”, tired/energetically depleted, then perhaps a warming supplement may be more appropriate. Herbalists often try to support the body’s elimination mechanisms as well – like the bowels, or the liver, or the airways, or perspiration. If an illness is chronic, or the person is chronically ill with a lot of different illnesses like Echinacea and Warnings, the approach may be a bit gentler, more supportive. The restoration of that person’s vitality would be a consideration in the choice of herbs, and the herbs would generally be more warming for Herbal supplements in the print media.
